Self-selected assignments, readings and tutorials challenge you to envision electronic marketing benefits for your industry and yourself -- now and in the future.

Objectives - after this module, you will be able to:

  • Given the opportunity, choose to participate in discussions of the differences and similarities between traditional and electronic marketing in the hospitality industry.
  • Use electronic communication technologies better, personally and professionally.
  • Use examples to summarise eight M's of Internet Management – mission, mechanics, metrics, marketing, management, maintenance, money and Murphy's Laws (Gesetze, Leggi, Loi, マーフイー).
  • Critique a hospitality company's website from both a design and marketing perspective.
  • Build basic web pages using hand-coded html and a software package.
  • Given a specific hospitality company, generate a story board for an effective website.
  • Explain the role of domain names in Internet branding.
  • Generate an effective plan for a company or organisation's "opt in" e-mail campaign.
  • Use examples to discuss treating email as business communication
Methodology
  • Class - lectures, discussions, guest speakers and labs (20 -25 hours)
  • Technology tutorials - honing your skills and training others (5 -10 hours)
  • Individual and group study (20 hours)

Evaluation

  • 30% Group project (due Friday) - In teams of four to six, you will tackle one of these projects:
    1. analyse relationships between domain name age and hotel websites
    2. prepare an electronic marketing plan for a hotel.
    3. a mutually agreed upon project related to electronic marketing
  • 15% Technology trend report - briefly summarise an electronic marketing trend (due Thursday)
  • 20% Active class participation - Emails, readings-based questions/quizzes, contribute to and lead class discussions.
  • 15% Exam - Short test addressing course objectives (Friday). Click here for a sample test.

    1. Enhance your online skills
    2. HTML coding exercise
    3. Online resume - post your resume online (due Wednesday)
    4. Explore domain name registration (due Tuesday)
    5. Debate Internet issues (Friday).
